Product Review | Shea Moisture x Camille Rose Product Combo For Low Porosity 3C Curls

Hey hey guys! Soooo, let’s talk about one of the best hair product combos I’ve used recently, for my thick, curly, natural hair!

Since coming back on my socials this year, I would have told y’all that I’ve decided to grow my hair out again. It’s been three amazing years of having my short pixie cut but I’m curious to see my long curls make a come back. In light of this, I’ve been testing out different product combos that best suit my low porosity curls and that will assist in my growth journey. So let’s get into this shall we?

For my new readers, below are my hair facts:

  • Hair Type: Predominantly 3C
  • Hair Porosity: Low
  • Density: Medium to High with thick hair strands
  • Other hair features: naturally dry, frizzy
  • Frequency of wash days: once per week (end of week/ beginning of a new week)
  • Climate: Tropical/ hot weather/ Humid
PRODUCT COMBINATION
Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk
Camille Rose Curl Maker

product application

State of Hair:

  1. Damp to Wet;
  2. Part in 4 equal sections

1st Impression of Products & Order of Application:

  1. Style Milk – this is my base
    – product is quite thick so styling on damp to wet hair is imperative to make styling easier
    – coconut, tropical fragrance (though I am not the biggest fan)
    – contains humectants such as Glycerin and Panthenol
  2. Curl Maker
    – product is not too thin or thick and is of a jelly consistency.
    – Not sticky
    – Light pleasant fragrance
    – contains humectants such as Panthenol and Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

Fun Fact: Humectants are ingredients that draw and retain moisture from the environment. These ingredients open up the hair cuticle to allow this moisture from the air, into the hair shaft. They are therefore especially beneficial to low porosity curls as it prevents the hair from dying out. Check out this resource to find out more about humectants for low porosity hair.

Application Methods Used

  • Comb through product with a wide tooth comb
  • Rake through each section with product, using fingers. This also helps with definition of curls.

WEEKLY WEAR

Below are my observations of my curls as the week unfolded:

DAY 1: SATURDAY

This was wash day. First day results achieved:

  • Maximum definition and hydration
  • No frizz
  • Nice cast while still retaining movement of curls
  • Moisturized curls
  • Tamed fro (not too big)
  • Shrinkage once completely dried

DAY 2: SUNDAY

Second day was not much different than the first. I usually keep my hair tied until I need to go out the house. Hair only required some fluffing to get back its shape.

  • Curls still very defined
  • No frizz
  • Visible shrinkage
  • Cast retained
  • No re-application of products needed

DAY 3: MONDAY

By this day onward, I needed to fluff my curls and spritz it with some water to re-activate the product. Once this was done, I noticed that:

  • Curls were still very moisturized
  • Curls felt softer
  • No re-application of products needed
  • Re-activation of the product already in my hair from Day 1 allowed the cast to be restored
  • Little to no Frizz

Note: I also worked out that evening and during the week, so this may have affected the results in the following days.

DAY 4: TUESDAY

  • Re-activiation of product needed by spritzing with water
  • Still no re-application of product needed
  • Minimal cast left but restored from re-activation of product
  • Curls are much softer and lighter
  • Fro is bigger with more movement
  • Curls were still defined and moisturized
  • Minimal frizz

DAY 5: WEDNESDAY

  • Re-activiation of product needed by spritzing with water
  • Little to no hold/ cast
  • Minimal re-application of product needed
  • Hair is super soft and light with lots of movement
  • Noticeable frizz
  • Loss of definition in some areas
  • Curls still moisturized
  • Fro is bigger

DAY 6 & 7 : THURSDAY – FRIDAY

By these last 2 days I was honestly done with my overgrown fro as it got so big over the days. In this heat chiiiillldddd. . . yeaaaaa no! So I just threw it in a low, sleek bun using regular gel and re-applying both products to define and moisturize my curl puff . However, even by this time, my curls were still soft and light. However, they definately required some re-application to restore moisture. This is what it looks like in a low and a high puff.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I would have tried this Style Milk with other jelly products and gotten much different results. For this reason, I suspect the Curl Maker carries the weight of how well my curls wore throughout the week. Longevity of moisture retention and hydration, was a major win with this combo, compared to others. I believe the products together helped to achieve this as when used separately, I do not notice this happening for such an extended time. With low porosity hair, it is difficult for moisture to get into the hair unless styled using the correct methods and products, so achieving this is always a plus!

I mostly loved the fact that I barely had to re-apply products daily. This was due tothe fact that the products already in my hair, would be easily re-activated with water and restore definition while retaining moisture. Finally, this is the second product I’ve used (Curl Maker) that contains Marshmallow Root as an ingredient. I suspect that this is an ingredient that works well in my hair to help moisturize without weighing down my tresses.

I absolutely loved this product combo and would recommend it to my fellow curlies with similar hair type and structure as my own. This gets a solid 8/10 for me!
