Product Review | Coco Body by Patrice Roberts – The Coconut Oil Soap Bar – A YAY OR A NAY?!

Hold your horses LOL, let’s begin with some background, shall we . . .

QUICK RUNDOWN!

Patrice Roberts is a soca artist, well known in Trinidad and throughout the Caribbean. Late last year, she launched her very own soap line called Coco Body. I must admit I was quite intrigued by this. It’s nice to see local & caribbean artists broadening their portfolio and investing in other markets apart from the music industry. So I followed the page and made a mental note to cop a few of the soaps once it had released.

Feel free to follow their socials below:

The soaps are marketed as an all natural coconut oil soap bar made of, you guessed it! Coconut oil! The line comprises of various scents such as:

  • Lavender (my favourite so far)
  • Coconut
  • Coffee
  • Peppermint
  • Tumeric!

Coco Body soaps also claim to be:

  • 100% All Natural
  • Cruelty free
  • Paraben Free
  • GMO Free
  • Sulfate Free

This is all great, honestly! 🙂 Before buying though, skim the ingredients list to see how you feel. I personally thought the listing was great. NO gimics and definately ALL NATURAL!

EXPECTATIONS & COST

Soooo sorry but . . .

Truthfully, I didn’t have much exceptions before purchasing this soap. I had tried a handful of other locally made soaps, some claiming to be vegan, and most of them just dried out my skin. So I took everything with a grain of salt. JUST KEEPIN’ IT ONE HUNED WITH YA! LOL but I digress….

When they actually released, I went to pennywise and got the lavender and coconut oil scents. At this time, the prices were:

  • Pennywise : TTD$21.95 for 2 – so essentially TTD$10.98 for 1 bar
  • Superpharm, Trincity : TTD$12.50 per bar | UPDATE – Now TTD$12.99 per bar
WHAT I LOved & didn’t fancy as much!

Upon drenching the soap with water, the quality of the soap is seemingly really good. I noticed some great characteristics:

  • It didn’t take long to lather up
  • It provided a decent lather
  • Cleansed the skin w/o stripping it – I was able to use this on my face too!
  • LOVE the new packaging. A cute & clean minimalist touch that has ease of accessibility to the soap

Given my little expectations, the performance of these soaps turned out really great. What hit me the most is that it did not suck the life from my skin and proved to be gentle enough to use on my face!!! A definite YAY!

When I first purchased! Initial packaging still cute tho!

Thankfully, the Coco Body brand has swapped their old plastic packaging for a nice, clean boxing. . . YESS! NO HATE but while I appreciated the unique plastic packaging before, with the perforated section to get the soap, it was a bit of a task. Often I would still have to further cut the package, with a scissors, to get the soap. If I didn’t, it would be a case of me trying to tear the packet with my fingers which proved a quite frustrating. SO THANKS PATRICE FOR CHANGING THE PACKAGING ❤

NEW PACKAGING IS SO BOMB!

On the flip side, some cons I noticed were:

  • The soap melts at a fairly high rate than a regular soap.
  • Nearing the end of a bar, it tends to crumble/ fall apart really easily.

I want to assume that it is perhaps due to a high content of oil in the base of the soap? I am not versed in the science of soap making LOL so really can’t be sure on that! Regardless, I purchased the soap again, about a month or so after its launch, and I actually did not experience the crumbling effect that happened the first time.

FINAL THOUGHTS

To me, these cute soaps were a YAY! I really like these soaps and they are LOCALLY MADE! The brand also state on the package that the soaps are actually cut by hand, which I think is a nice touch.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
